How to Get Better at Golf With a Busy Schedule

Written by SCGA Team | Oct 11, 2016 7:00:31 PM

It's tough trying to find time to golf when your schedule is filled with work or school or both. If you're really serious about the sport, then it's imperative to find time for it. However that's easier said than done. A busy schedule is stressful, and golf just might be the relaxant that you need.

There's no magical way to make time for golf. You can't just stop time or freeze the sun in the sky, sacrifices will need to be made to get a few swings in. Let's just hope they aren't too extreme.

Make use of Every Second of Every Day

Sorry, but there's no more room for procrastinating. If you've designated time to do something, then do it. The more time you can shave off and add to your time golfing, the better. If this means you have to wake up earlier than you really have to, then so be it.

Come to terms with the fact that you're not going to be able to golf at the perfect time. You're not going to be able to make it to the course and golf when the sun is in the perfect spot in the sky. Even if the sun is going down and everything is going to close down in an hour, you've gotta do what you gotta do.

Golf Close to Home

Yes, we all know your favorite course is on the other side of town. Unfortunately you're going to have cheat on it with a closer course if you want to get that golfing action. Like I said, sacrifices are going to need to be made.

If you have to, get some swings in at the rundown, grungy course down the street from your house. Until your workload dies down, you're going to have to learn to love it. Plus, there's something to appreciate about not being in the most ideal settings while working on your game.

Use What you Have

You have a putter and carpet, right? If so, then you practically have the green inside your house. Okay maybe not exactly, but it's a useful alternative.

No one ever said you need a ball to practice your swing. Hopefully you have a backyard for this one, but even if you don't, you can hopefully walk a couple minutes to an open area. Just hack away at the imaginary ball and get your form right. When I was a kid, I used to dive around in my backyard pretending I was catching imaginary touchdowns, so there's no reason why you can't do that with your swing.

Center any Free Time Around Golf

Whew, you finally got some free time. But wait, your spouse wants you to hang out with her and the kids. Not a problem! Just take them to the golf course!

I'm only half-joking, because some courses have great accommodations for kids. However if they don't already golf, your spouse may need some convincing.

If you have time to kill, instead of spending it inside watching TV or on the computer, head out to the golf course and get some well-deserved swings in.

Join a Golf Club

I know what you're thinking: I already have a hard enough time finding room in my schedule for golf, how is dropping a ton of money on a membership I won't use enough to make it worth it going to help that? But therein lies the answer: by putting some weight behind your commitment to make time.

I'm not saying you need to find somewhere that will blow up your monthly budget to meet some food and beverage minimum, although if it's within your means then a private club membership will certainly encourage you to play more. But you can also find one of the over 1,200 public golf communities in Southern California to join and open up a whole new world of playing opportunities. Whether you're playing in monthly tournaments or have fellow members hitting you up to sneak in a round whenever possible, you'll find there's always someone waiting for you to join them on the course...and you'll almost always find a way to make it happen. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to take all the planning that goes into booking a round off your plate. Let the club officials worry about the course, the date, the time, and filling slots; all you have to do is block off your calendar, show up, and play.
